Call for Participants! 6th Hiroshima Summer School (21-24 August, Japan)

 Please join SCORP-Japan’s 6th Hiroshima Summer School (HSS). This is
a unique opportunity to get fully acquainted and up to date on
radiation effects.
Every year, students from all over the world join this popular
program; last year we had participants from Canada, Germany,
Indonesia, Sudan, Spain, and Japan (of course). This year, we hope you
will join us!


1. Background
 Japan is the only country subjected to atomic bomb attacks. Even
today, there are still a lot of hibakusha, survivors, who still suffer
from the 1945 Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb attacks. Their
symptoms remain difficult to medically diagnose.
Currently, although about 3,500 atomic-bomb survivors live outside of
Japan, the number of people who are accidentally irradiated continues
to increase worldwide due to such factors as accidents in atomic power
plants, nuclear testing and the recent war time use of depleted
uranium shells. We, future doctors need to learn how irradiation
affects human health and how we should approach those victims.

2. Programme
The 6th HSS will  not only include lectures and seminars on the
medical and social effects of a-bombs and how we should approach
irradiated patients as future medical professionals but will also have
extra sessions to increase our overall knowledge and understanding of
this profound topic.
This year, Japan experienced a huge earthquake and the accidents at
nuclear power plants in Fukushima. We hold a session on discussing the
accident at the nuclear power plant.
We conduct study tours to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum
(http://www.pcf.city.hiroshima.jp/top_e.html), Radiation Effect
Research Fund (http://www.rerf.or.jp/index_e.html), a clinic and a
nursing home for a-bombs survivors and other places of interest. Of
course, every evening we also have enough time to enjoy the city of
Hiroshima. There is a social programme which you can visit world
heritage Miyajima.

3. Application
You are required to major in medicine/nursing/ health science etc. and be a member of IFMSA.

There are many ways to access to Hiroshima.

Here, we suggest two ways; from Hiroshima airport and from Kansai International Airport.

For Saving Money!!

If you plan to travel Japan and visit some places for different regions spending one week or more, Buying Japan Railway Pass is a very good way to save a transportation expense.

It is unlimited use of JR trains, buses and ferries including Shinkansen lines within the period of validity.

Please note JR Passes can be bought only outside Japan and it is only for "temporary visitors"

I am envious because Japanese cannot have the pass. Actually, it has a really good value. For example, when you make a round trip between Osaka and Tokyo by Shinkansen, it costs 27,500 yen. Meanwhile, a JR Pass for 7 days costs 28,300 yen. It is obvious how valuable the pass is.

Using highway buses is also a good way for budget transportation.

JR Group has a big highway bus network between most major cities.

Using highway buses is originally cheaper than JR trains. Especially some major lines such as between Kyoto and Tokyo tend to be cheaper (the cheapest range of that is less than 4,000 yen). Many of Highway bus lines go overnight. You can save daytime and the lodging cost.

What is Hiroshima Summer School?

Hiroshima Summer School (HSS) is organized by Organizing Committee for Hiroshima Summer School, Standing Committee of Human Rights and Peace (SCORP-Japan). This is an official project of IFMSA-Japan, which has started since 2004. We invite medical students all over the world to Hiroshima and offer the opportunities to learn the damege caused of Atomic bomb from many viewpoints.
